Health and Wellbeing Technologies research
Health and wellbeing technologies are a multidisciplinary field that stands at the intersection of healthcare, social care, and computer science, with the main objective to revolutionise the way we monitor, maintain, and improve our physical and mental health and wellbeing. Driven by the latest advances in medical informatics, machine learning, wearables, smart environments, and data science, health and wellbeing technologies research is at the forefront of addressing pressing health and social care challenges through computer science innovations.
Our work utilises strong links and partnerships with healthcare providers, social care organisations, and health technology companies to facilitate adoption of our research by industry to create tangible and lasting impact on people’s health and wellbeing. Our work with the Royal College of Physicians has set a new standard for assessing the severity of acute illness (known as the "National Early Warning Score" or NEWS). This process is now used by 100% of paramedics and 76% of hospitals across NHS England.
The range of problems that we are addressing in our work covers in-hospital care, including intensive care units and surgery, post-treatment rehabilitation for conditions like stroke, and promotion of independence and wellbeing in residential and business settings, including ageing population, long term health conditions, health and safety at work, and mobile health.
