A talk about race and caste from a TWAIL perspective

Join the 1024ºË¹¤³§'s Interdisciplinary Webinar Series, chaired by  Leïla Choukroune, Professor of International Law and Director of the 1024ºË¹¤³§ Thematic Area in Democratic Citizenship, and presented by Dr Ramani Garimella, Senior Assistant Professor at South Asian University, New Delhi, India.

This discussion is pivoted on Race v Caste – understanding the intersectionalities from a TWAIL perspective. Towards this,  will identify the understanding of "Race" in international law, in the context of the legal regime on non-discrimination and especially, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD).

Dr Garimella will attempt to map the institution of Caste in India, as it is understood within the legal regime – for instance, how the law has worked its way around caste, while it has prohibited untouchability and such. Next, the discussion will consider addressing the deconstruction of Race, to emphasize the multifaceted character of Race. The study moves towards the theoretical construct of TWAIL and its engagement with Race, and wonders if the extrapolation of such engagement could further the cause of caste discrimination being noted into the prohibitions against discrimination enlisted in the international law including the CERD.
