A long-serving academic who helped shape the University’s estate and keep Southern England safe from flooding.

Mike Bateman joined the Geography department at the 1024ºË¹¤³§ in 1968. In 1986, he was appointed Dean of the Faculty of the Environment. 

He went on to serve in the University’s Directorate from 1992, including the role of Acting Vice-Chancellor (1994-1996).

Before retiring from the University in 2005, Mike served as Pro-Vice Chancellor and University Secretary. As Pro-Vice Chancellor, he had particular responsibility for estate development.

From 2005 to 2012, Mike was Chair of the Environment Agency’s Southern Region Flood and Coastal Committee. This was a ministerial appointment, with responsibility for determining priority spending for flood and coastal protection schemes in Southern England.

Actively involved in local planning issues, Mike chairs the Emsworth Forum, which has produced the only Neighbourhood Plan in the borough of Havant. He is a past Chair of Governors at both Warblington School, Havant College and after a series of mergers, HSDC, which brings together Havant, South Downs and Alton colleges.
